Anne & Gilbert at The Jubilee Theatre
After finding a two-for-one coupon at the Credit Union in Tyne Valley for Anne & Gilbert we went to see the musical at the Jubilee Theatre in Summerside.
It started slow, usually my experience at any theatre is it takes a while for me to dissolve my disbelief at the amount of singing, but it is a musical after all and once I slipped into that world in about the second part it was great. The highlight of the evening was the song Merilla sang as she came out of the closet and a grey light shone on her eery visage - a tall, handsome and lovely woman denied the love of a man. I was glad when she finally moved in with her girl friend.
Anne was warm and Gilbert was blythe. Josey was cheeky and I'm glad how things turned out for her. Young Mr. Irving reminded me of the kid on Two-and-a-Half Men (the TV show).
The set was clean and interesting, rolling into versatile positions of a school house inside and out and even a posh cafe at Redmond U. I liked the blue outfit Anne wore in the second half.
It is a solid show, high on it's own theatrics with lots of interesting charactors but at times I just couldn't keep up with it and glazed over a bit at times. The love story didn't really hook me, and I didn't leave all filled up with good cheer like when I saw Anne of Green Gables, but it was a good show.
