PEI Tourism Advertising: Sell Charlottetown not PEI
I know the old rivalry between Charlottetown and Summerside makes this a hard concept to accept for some (-ersiders). But, I think the advertising is all done in the name of Prince Edward Island as the brand. It should be Charlottetown. It's one word, it's a city (which proves we are not living in igloos, which I bet some people in Alabama could be convinced of), and it could be presented as the city surounded by beautiful beaches. Which it is.
Seriously, PEI is hard to remember the first time you hear it. Charlottetown isn't.
And aren't we islanders all proud of our capital city? Let's make it the centre piece of teh advertising campagin next year. Could we do any worse anyway?
Even if this is a good idea marketwise it is unfeasible politically of course. So then, is the Dept. of Tourism selling to island voters or potential toursists? I bet it's priorities are mixed.

Why would communities of interest concede to Charlottetown getting all the tourists? If a tourist can't remember the words 'Prince Edward Island,' I highly doubt that they'd be able to navigate to this 'Charlottetown' regardless.
Prince Edward Island has more name recognition than Charlottetown as well. I don't see how your idea would benefit anyone.
My point is the governments hands are tied to advertise PEI only, since it would be political suicide to focus on just the capital city. So the advertising campaign is partly serving to please us, in PEI, when it should be doing whatever it takes to get the most tourists here, regardles of how that plays at home here.
Plus I'm crassly tapping into the anti-Charlottetown vein to create excitement about my blog. Thanks!
Shouldn't that be one of the roles of the capital commission and not the provincial government?
p.s. the whole anti Charlottetown thingy hurts your credibility ;)
Being from California, I think Prince Edward Island sounds more "Canadian" than Charlottetown. When I hear Charlottetown, I think of the Southern U.S. I've never been to PEI, but it evokes images of Vancouver Island in my mind.
