Aliant DSL vs. RoadRunner Cable, in NC

Aliant DSL service is rock solid which is best for my Vonage calling - no dropped calls. However in terms of speed my RoadRunner cable modem kicks ass at 4.5Mb download rates, and you can even upgrade from there to 8Mb premium service. But it has hiccups, maybe one a day or so - like Mr. Fred Hodge my Hollanbd College electronics instructor would say "Up and down like a whore's drawers".

Couple more things, Aliant won't let my email client send mail (have to mask it with Aliants outgoing server), but RR does. Also, Aliant switches up my IP like daily, where RoadRunner hasn't renewed my IP address in over a month. So RR makes for a better server access.

I don't know anything about the particular carries you are speaking of but I would like to point something out. Your 4.5Mbps is not really that rockin, even compared to 768Kbps DSL (you didn't specify the speed of your Alient connection).

Consider this, compared to dial up, a 6.0Mbps connection saves you 145 seconds per MB of download. A 768Kbps connection accounts for 93.5% of that time savings at 136 seconds saved per MB compared to dial up. The question you have to ask yourself is whether the extra expense for cable is worth it given a mere 6.5% increase in saved time?

It's an unfortunate myth being perpetuated by the cable company touting ever increasing speeds but neglect to identify the ever decreasing saving in time. It's an inverse relationship with larger and larger numbers doubling and smaller and smaller numbers being halved.

I've written an article with a graph and tables if you would like to see the details. It's at simpletidbits.com.
