Broadcasting is adcasting
Broadcasting means adcasting, and I am so sick of ads.
I was told in marketing class that advertisements redeeming good was that they gave consumers information needed to make better consumption choices. Then they give it again, again, and again. Commercials drive me crazy. I think that is proof that commercials can have a significant impact on the human psyche. They must drive other people crazy too!
I hate commercials, and would vote for any politician who outlaws them, any politician. However, politicians depend on media purchases to win don't they.
Obesity is an epedemic in part because of too many food ads. Another marketing concept I learned was to use peer groups in ads to appeal to your need to be part of a group.
The frequency of the same ad repeating itself is what frustrates me most. They design them using psychological techniques to grab your attention. Commercials are the most visible form of corruption in our society today.
The last thing I want to note is how so many shows are becoming straightup infomercials. Oprah's favourite things, Conan O'Brien constantly talking about his new HDTV format (go GE!), Campbells soup labels driving the entire plot of a recent Seventh Heaven episode (don't ask).
Could a politician even reform the ad industry? Commercials are probably guaranteed free speech in the constitution (US and Canada). I can only think of one solution: turn the TV and radio off. Get the DVD or download your shows using bit torrent.
